Lyme Disease in Australia

Lyme Disease is an illness caused by a bacteria called Borrelia burgdorferi.  It is primarily carried by ticks.  Humans can become infected through tick bites when the bacteria is transmitted from tick to human.  There is also concern it may be transmitted via fleas, mites, lice and mosquitoes.

Lyme Disease can be transmitted with other co-infections during a bite.  These co-infections can include parasites such as barbesia, viral infections such as Epstein Barr virus (EBV), Parovirus and Cytomegalovirus (CMV) and bacteria such as Rickettsia, Ehrlichia, Coxiella, Mycoplasma and others.

Symptoms of Lyme Disease

Once infected with Borellia burgdorferi and co-infections they can cause many diverse  symptoms in the body and can imitate  many different illnesses.   These include

  • Autistic-spectrum disorders
  • Bell's Palsy
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Guillain-Barre syndrome
  • Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis
  • Lupus
  • Motor neurone disease
  • Multi system atrophy
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Rheumatoid arthritis

and many other conditions.

It must be said that not all cases of these illnesses are caused by Lyme Disease, but a Lyme Disease Practitioner will be able to identify and differentiate.

Diagnosis of Lyme Disease in Australia

A bullseye rash can occur in some people bitten by a tick and infected with the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria.  However less than 35% of people with Lyme Disease have noticed a rash.  Most people with Lyme Disease have no recollection of being bitten by a tick bite.  Diagnosis is made by a Lyme Disease Practitioner and based on clinical picture and various blood tests.

Treatment

Lyme Disease treatment is very comprehensive.  An wholistic approach is needed in the treatment of Lyme Disease.  Simply trying to eradicate the bacteria and co-infections is not enough and will often make the sufferer more sensitive and unwell.

Many of the symptoms of Lyme Disease are due to toxins being released by the bacteria and co-infections.  The body needs to be supported on all levels to effectively eradicate and deal with Lyme Disease.

Treatment must involve dietary changes.   Food is medicine and can help the body heal and deal with the eradication of Lyme Disease.

Herbal medicine can be used to eradicate the bacteria and co-infections, as well as stimulate immunity and give the body the best chance at dealing effectively with Lyme Disease.

Stress management is also vitally important in treatment.  Adrenal glands are under major stress with Lyme Disease and relaxation techniques are a vital part of the treatment.

Gut repair also forms an integral part of treatment.  Many people with Lyme Disease have parasites, Candida and food sensitivities and associated symptoms.  Healing the gut will help the person better deal with the treatment protocols as well as facilitate absorption of nutrients from food.

Detoxification is the cornerstone of natural medicine and must be supported safely and effectively in the treatment of Lyme Disease.  It is important to be undertaken with a Lyme Practitioner who knows the safe and correct way to help the body naturally detoxify for Lyme Disease treatment.

Natural medicine is also well equipped at dealing with the many symptoms that accompany Lyme Disease.  Naturopathy can be combined with antibiotics in the treatment of Lyme Disease.  Some people however cannot tolerate antibiotics.  Natural medicine can be used alone very successfully in the treatment of Lyme Disease.
