True allergy occurs when your body releases IgE antibodies in response to to a food or inhalant it mistakenly believes is harmful. These antibodies can be measured via a blood test in an IgE allergy test. Allergic reactions are often triggered by foods such as peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, dairy and eggs and inhaled allergens such as dust, pollen and pet dander. Allergy symptoms typically appear within minutes and up to two hours after you have been exposed to the food or inhalant allergen. This is one of the differences between fast-onset allergies and food sensitivities which tend to have a delayed onset. Allergy Testing for Food and Inhaled Allergens If you suspect that you have an allergy, IgE allergy testing can quickly identify what is triggering your allergic reaction and causing your symptoms. What is an IgE allergy test? An IgE allergy test is a type of blood test used to diagnose allergic reactions. A sample of your blood is exposed to a range of suspected allergens that may be triggering your allergic reactions. The amount of antibodies is measured against these allergens.
