Food is Medicine * Diet is a very important part of health care, illness treatment and disease prevention. * Nutrient deficiencies can lead to ill-health, as can impaired digestion, chronic inflammation and toxicity in the body. * Good nutrition helps people remain healthy, attain good health and age successfully. Over 70% of all deaths in modern western societies are linked to diet, particularly high levels of fat, sugar and salt. Diabetes, hypoglycaemia, hypertension, heart disease, colon cancer, obesity, angina, atherosclerosis, gallbladder disease, arthritis, kidney disease, liver damage, hyperactivity and migraine can all be linked to dietary deficiencies and improper nutrition. The average western diet is deficient in protein, vitamins, minerals, phyto-nutrients, essential fatty acids, fibre and water. Conversely it is excessively high in salt, sugar, artificial flavourings, colourings, preservative, saturated fat and trans fats. This imbalance and the incorrect type of foods can cause faulty development of cells, which in turn can result in the malfunctioning of specific organs and eventually lead to disease. Food is medicine and can be used to treat and prevent illness, disease and degenerative conditions. |
